• These Christmas bulbs are the best money can buy

    LU-28

G30 Warm White LEDs on a home in Winnipeg. These lights were installed underneath the soffit.

These are the best LEDs I’ve seen yet and feel quite excited about them. They’re called G30 “super-bright” bulbs and I think you will start seeing them up on houses in Winnipeg more and more in the next few years.

Why are they good? First and foremost, it’s because they’re strikingly bright. They remind me very much of the shine you get from a classic clear incandescent Christmas light bulb – though of course at a tiny fraction of the energy cost. Inside the 1″ diameter bulb are 5 LEDs which have been stacked to send out light at the widest possible angle. They are extremely durable and the lifespan of the bulbs is rated 50,000 hours… which is a really long time.

I also believe the small size of the bulbs is a nice touch – particularly for permanent installs where lights are up year-round and it’s best of the lights aren’t as noticeable when they’re not being used. But they are also a fantastic Christmas light for seasonal installations, too. And, yes, they’re available in all colors – even turquoise.

If this is something that interests you give us a call or fire us an email. Price at the writing of this post is $2.20 per bulb which is around seventy-five cents more than our standard 5-LED Christmas light. It may very well be worth! Enjoy a few more photos below 🙂

  • Top 4 Reasons to Install your Christmas Lights in October

     Lindenwoods house with sign

Installing Christmas lights for our clients last week was like a breath of warm, 18-degree Celsius, fresh, Winnipeg air. I like putting up lights anytime during the season (I’m apparently a little odd) but it’s a special treat in October.

But it’s not just good for myself and the crews – it’s a win-win for our clients as well. Here are a few of the reasons:

    Jon Tree Bucket Truck Summer

    1. Safety

Ice is slippery. Snow hides things. Roads don’t work as good in winter. Even in an environment of ice and snow, our crews can rest assured that they have the right tools, materials, and, usually, beards for the job. But in the warmer October weather they still have all those things plus few, if any, impediments in their environment. Work can be done more comfortably, with fewer distractions, and more daylight. It’s certainly preferred.

    2. Quality

Quality is always #1 for our company when it comes to Christmas lights or anything else. That said, we like to go the extra mile often on jobs and a wise man once said that a happy worker does good work… or something like that. It’s why whenever I hire workers for my house, I buy the Tim’s. Installing in sweater weather is even better than a double-double for a Christmas light installer.

    3. Lower Prices

Because of the two points above, we have started offering discounts to our clients for booking early and getting their lights installed before October 21st. A 10% discount on labor usually means between $20 and $50 off, which we feel is a respectable discount. Good for us, good for you. Additionaly, I’ve looked back over the years at my Christmas estimates (and I’ve given quite a few of them…) and I have the tendency to quote a little lower in general in September/October compared to when our schedule is nearly full and I start to get stressed out in November 🙂

     4. Guaranteed Scheduling

We always fill up our prime install weeks. I think it’s best to get your lights installed properly and early and be ahead of the game. Somehow people seem less enthused about installing lights in mid-December….

The drawbacks? I really can’t see any. Most of our clients get their lights installed early and just wait to turn them on when they are ready. By installing in October you get the best possible job at the best possible price, too. An all-around good idea.

  • The Forks Build a Brighter Bridge

Mike and I knew Paul Jordan because we are members of the Riel Gentlemen’s Choir. The choir had spent a day in eight canoes paddling the Assiniboine downstream towards Winnipeg. We sang many songs this day and of course would put on a concert whenever another vessel would pass. One such (un)lucky patron of this concert series was Paul Jordan, Chief Operating Officer of The Forks Renewal Corporation. Many songs sung at The Forks seemed to follow immediately after this – and by invitation too.

A year and a few York boats later, Mike and I stroll into The Forks offices with a lighting proposal. We came out of this meeting with a budget amount and two restrictions:

    1. Make it look good.
    2. Don’t screw it up.

In winter, The Forks, named so because it is the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, turns these frozen waterways into the world’s longest ice-skating trail which features hockey and curling rinks, beer gardens, fashion shows, music venues, a rugby field, an international architectural competition for warming huts, and a 30 seat five-course restaurant. Yes, all on the ice. The Forks is Winnipeg’s number one tourist destination with more than four million visitors annually and The Forks Renewal Corp does a fantastic job of supervising what takes place at this 6000 year old meeting place.

Humbled and challenged by our two restrictions, we set to work designing and assembling a canopy of lights that would suspend above visitors walking, cycling, or skating across the Assiniboine River on the old Bascule bridge. We chose to make a gradient using the colours of Hudson’s Bay Company blankets as a reference to the Canadian fur trade, during the height of which the Assiniboine and the Red were kept busy as transport routes.

It took us one day to prepare the lights and cables, and five days to install. The result, 2600 LED’s hanging over the entire length and width bridge; 330 feet x 30 feet.

In Winnipeg, winter nights can last upwards of 17 hours, and it takes a resilient population to endure the entire season. This makes light a valued tool that allows the public to stay active and claim winter as a time for civic and artistic celebration. The Forks Renewal Corporation understands this and is a wonderful group to work with. They are an organization that exists to serve the community and is an example of what makes Winnipeg such a vibrant place to be.
